Local Area Information

Islay, 'The Queen of the Hebrides' is located off the west coast of Scotland. Islay's climate benefits from the warm Gulf Stream resulting in a very mild climate. The rich peaty soil make it ideal for creating whisky, and despite only having a population of 3000, it's home to eight of the worlds greatest distilleries.

However, there is more to Islay than just whisky. Miles of unspoilt beaches, friendly people, wonderful wildlife including over 100 species of birds, golf, cycling, fishing, horseriding and hillwalking are only a few of many possible activities.

Annual festivals on the island attract many visitors, especially the Islay Festival of Malt and Music, which is held in May. Other festivals are the Islay Jazz Festival, the Beach Rugby Festival and the Cantilena festival.
